No more carrying a 500 yard Elk gun in Texas hills :D I'm getting the short action, light weight, light recoiling, fast stepping 7mm-08 (my fav caliber for deer). Chuck C got the RR, anyone else done some detective work yet on what Santa's bringing?

I think the 7-08 still a little over kill for Texas white tails.

6MM Rem works very well here. ;)

6MM Rem works very well here. ;) </font>[/QUOTE]The choice of rifles is limited as is the rate of twist for the .244 Rem (6MM Rem) .243 Win is a much better choice. However the knock down power of the 7mm 140 gr bullet is unbelievable and legendary, it has extremely high Sectional Density and Ballistic Cooeficient (Nosler 140gr BT) and all the "better" gun manufacturers (Steyr, Kimber, Browning, Sako etc) chamber their rifles in this caliber. With the .24x caliber you have to hit the shoulder thus damaging meat, for quick kills, a 7mm bullet will drop an aminal in it's tracks even with a lung shot so no meat is damaged and there is no need for tracking or chance of loosing the animal. Plus I love the 7mm bullet as I grew up hunting Big Horn Sheep with a 7mm Mauser, did I mention it's deadly knockdown capability? the 08 version is lighter recoiling. Use a .243 for varminting/hogs, shot a 8 point buck using a 100gr Nosler Fail Safe (.243), had to track it for about 200 yards in thick cover, was a meat saving lung shot. Just my opinion/experience though. Here is an interesting comparison (http://members.tripod.com/sed88/rem7/compare.html)

As a previous diehard KTM owner, I can tell you that owning a KTM is a surprisingly wonderful feeling you get, almost like showing up at the spots in an exotic. I loved my 250 EXC and short from it's tempermental jetting habits, you'll wonder why other bikes aren't built the way the Aussie do it.

That being said, the moment you need anything it's a drive to DFW KTM or Cycle Town where you'll find that even buying a sparkplug requires a deep pocket. Silly things, like seals for the WP forks, and air filters for the tooless box, oil filters (if you're going thumper) come in at a price, and often. BUT, this model has electric start as well!! Great if you want to enter TORO races where the starts are dead-enging starts.

The 250 EXC you listed (As you know I had the 2000 model) is without a doubt hands down best Enduro machine out their in two-smoke. Again, get the jetting done right ( the come grossly rich from KTM) and you'll be impressed. Suspension is great, despite some folks not liking the PDS rear spring...I loved it as taking it off was a snap. But...like the thumper...if you bend/break anything ESPECIALLY the Enduro fender, be prepared. I had to replace mine after a moment at Rocky Ridge and the two-piece Enduro fender setup was over one bill. You'll love having a reserve for fuel. But if I were to do it again, I'd do the MXC instead.

The WR250F. Good trail bike despite wanting to be WFO at 13,500 to get decent power from it. Also comes with magic button which is great for the TORO races. I've done it on my 250EXC and the TORO race is the most fun I've had on a dirtbike, well...almost the most fun ;)

AS far as the RMZ 250 goes, never been a fan, so I'll leave that one to someone else.

A great of purchase decision depends on what you like to ride. Buying a KTM EXC to ride on a motorcross track is pointless. Buying a KTM SX just to ride trails is pointless. Thankfully, KTM helps you enjoy both in the MXC versions. It has the gearing and almost the suspension of the SX but the pre-wired electrics of the EXC if you decide you like riding in the dark. I spent a cool $1000 on my EXC's Racetek suspension to suit me, a Class B rider at the time.

Same goes for the YZ / YZF factor.

Love mine!

The only Bad thing I could say is that it was a ***** to get started during the break-in period. I could go on and on about the upside. I dont miss two-smoking in the least. ;)
Amber, if yer seriously considering it, take mine out next time you show up to play in the dirt. Consider also the trail version: slightly closer gearbox, that magic start button, and kickstand. smile.gif

Wow, thanks for all of that information Lloyd! You are a great help. I have always lusted after KTM's.....and wish to have a 200EXC. The price tag on those is a little steep, as well as everything else as you said and that is what is holding me back!! P.S. I still have your book!! It has really been coming in handy during all this research! Hey another questions for you, have you rode the WR250? I heard that it has the most power in midrange than all the other 250 4's...and the KTM is supposed to be the worst for torque. Hmmm that KTM400 4-stroke is starting to sound better....

I plan to do trail riding, hill climbing, and enduros. Maybe some small girly type jumps, and I'll pretend I can be a mxer during those fleeting moments!

And John, I did "mention" the Honda, just got tired of posting all thost photos! I can't seem to find one for sale in the "x" model. :(

This is what I have narrowed my search down to, any of the below I will buy at the right price if any of you come across it:

KTM 200EXC 2stroke (2001-2004)
KTM 250EXC RFS (Racing 4-stroke) (2002-2004)
Yamaha WR250F (2002-2004)
Honda CRF250X (2002-2004)

The 250 4's MUST have the magic button!!

TIA-

Of the ones you've listed in your new list, the only I don't have any seat time on is the CRF250x

No matter which you choose, of the ones you listed, you'll be quite happy with either. You just have to first decide....mixing fuel...or potiental overheating. ;)

Well, thank you for asking.

Santa brought me (4) replacement speakers for my truck (Rockford Fosgate) that could probably blow the windows out !

I also ordered a pair of custom made/fitted boots from Westcoast Shoe Company for riding. In addition to just being really cool, they are insulated for cold; waterproof; steel toes; and will likely live longer than me.

Isn't life great !

Another Option (http://www.hwy929.com/forsale/) Cheaper parts, better suspension, smoother power than KTM.

Nathan got a couple of pics of the event. The poor guy that sold me the bike, had to wait an hour and a half for us at a gas station. We were dragging our feet a little bit getting on the road.

Nathan,

I rode it around the block a little when I got it home. Seemed smooth enough.
