Here is the story from the owner of this very special monocycle.

"This MV Augusta 60cc Monomoto Superleggera is the experimental machine ridden by young wealthy Italian Luiggi Bandini, during practice for the 1954 Milano-Taranto Road Race.

Bandini tragically lost control in a misty mountain section, while waving to a pretty spectator. His grief stricken father, Count Enzio Bandini, “The Falcon,” never again permitted anyone to ride or even view this advanced design, and knowledge of its whereabouts faded. Eventually, rumors of this fascinating machine reached the motorcycling bon vivant Todd Fell. On a trip to Naples, Italy, his quest to find it was rewarded at the Bandini country villa, where in 2004, fifty years after the tragic accident, the late Count’s family was persuaded to part with the treasure.""

This is a great example of what happens when some moron goes to home depot and buys a 120V MIG welder and thinks they are going to be the king.

Those welds look horrible, and I'll bet they are about as strong as bubble gum and fishing line.

Whoever did this should never be allowed near a welder again!

jdugger
September 27th, 2007, 10:50 PM
Now THAT is Itialian art!!

No kidding. The joinery on that exhaust is amazing. That's Ti, eh? Expensive and very difficult to weld, and someone paid a very pretty penny for this system. Ti must be done in an Argon chamber -- just setting up the fixtures to make a single weld costs you something like $10 worth the Argon.

Actually, he should be forced to weld until he11 freezes over or he learns what welding is.

Actually, he should be forced to weld until he11 freezes over or he learns what welding is.

No one that doesn't grind those out and try again should be allowed near the welder again! If I'd done that job and called it complete, I'd be ashamed!

I went to school for TIG, so when I see crap like that Ducati it makes me pretty sick. We had to do the same joints over and over and in all kinds of contorted body positions and backwards until I could eyeball a joint, execute it by hand in steel, Aluminum, or Stainless and *know* -- just by looking -- that it would pass x-ray, dye penetrant, and destructive stress testing.

The work on the MV exhaust is nice work. That first close up actually looks more like a MIG bead than a TIG. The pipe work though is clearly TIG. There's obvious undercut in the pipe welds, but I doubt they are worried about structural issues in those joints, so it doesn't really matter. The weldor that did them is well practiced: notice the uniformity of the bead and consistency of the puddle freezes... this is nice work.

Italians know something about tourbillons?

No they don't so they ask assistance from Swiss watchmakers for in
house movement production. True tourbillons will run you couple of hundred thousand dollars easy for a piece. Here is a good example:

http://www.thewatchquote.com/mesIMG/imgStd/21861.jpg

Brief history of Panerai for those who enjoy that type of thing. http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Panerai was founded in 1860 in Florence by Giovanni Panerai (1825–1897). It later became the official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy and expanded to building precision instruments. The company is famous for its Radiomir and Luminor watches, notable for their use by Italian "commando frogmen"

Italy was the first nation to use frogmen and "human torpedoes".
These were electrically propelled torpedoes with two crewmen equipped with diving suits riding astride. They steered the torpedo at slow speed to the enemy ship. The detachable warhead was then used as a limpet mine. They then rode the torpedo away.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/91/Chariot_cdba2_seabed.jpg

The Decima Flottiglia MAS (Decima Flottiglia Mezzi d'Assalto, also known as La Decima or Xª MAS) (Italian for "10th Assault Vehicle Flotilla") was an Italian commando frogman unit of the Regia Marina (Italian Royal Navy).

In 1943, after the ouster of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Italy left the Tripartite Pact and joined the Allies. Many of the Xª MAS men who were stationed in German-occupied northern Italy enlisted to fight for Mussolini's newly-formed Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana or RSI) and retained the unit title, but were primarily employed as an anti-partisan force operating on land. Other Xª MAS men in southern Italy or other Allied-occupied areas joined the Italian Co-Belligerent Navy as part of the Mariassalto (Naval Assault) unit.

The Florence-based watchmaker produced about 300 watches, all for the Italian Marina Militare, between 1938 and 1993. By that time, the company ceased to provide watches to the Marina Militare, as they were no longer cost-effective. It then moved to launch its products to the civilian market, but remained relatively obscure until the actor Sylvester Stallone spotted and bought a Panerai Luminor in a jewellery store in Rome in 1995 to wear during shooting of the film "Daylight". Stallone ordered a small batch of such watches with his signature on the case back, called Slytech. He offered them as gifts to friends, including Arnold Schwarzenegger. The watch gained rapid popularity, and Officine Panerai was eventually taken over by Richemont in 1997.

DAY 5

Day 5 was a good day. It started at 4:30AM as we had to be on the salt at 6:00AM so we could be toward the front of the line to run our back up run for the record. Our competitor Suzuki made every effort to run before us and we welcomed that as this would tell us how hard we’d have to run. To beat us he’d have to go 200mph and we didn’t think with would happen…and it didn’t. His fastest time was 189mph. Rosey then went out and made a safe run of 191.5 mph which gave us the new record:

WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD

PRODUCTION MOTORCYCLE

MV AGUSTA F41000-312R

193.456MPH – 311.335 KPH

Finally we felt we had gone fast enough to hold the record, but we have more speed we haven’t used and we’ll probably save that until Thursday and this Suzuki isn’t going away. We’ve dealt with all our other competition, but this guy is as focused as we are….and he’s using a “heated” up engine against our stock engine.

After this run we prepared the Triumph that belongs to Rosey and Ken and also the F4 1000 R so I could make my “Rookie” run…which is something I’ve always wanted to do. I went first and was not allowed to exceed 125mph. I hit 126mph and am prepared to go to 150mph tomorrow assuming no surprises from the competition. The Triumph broke, but they’ll have it fixed in the morning.

I was asked what it was like to make my first run down the salt….the only word that comes to mind is “humbling”. As hard as this is to believe is there is a perfect calm in your mind when you are at top speed. What a great life’s experience!

So we have a plan and we also are flexible enough to change at any moment. I think we have all the bases covered.

Finally…how fast do I think we really can go with the F4 312R…? 200mph!

The MV’s are just fantastic pieces of equipment and art! More tomorrow.

Putting a turbo (a high speed device) is smarter than using a blower (a low speed device) on almost any motor that spins more than 6k rpm.

Bonneville does't reward low speed grunt. It rewards high horsepower at high rpm. A blower won't do that for you in an engine designed for high rpm. Blowers become LESS efficient as a function of speed and turbos become MORE efficient as a function of speed.

You can make the turbo slightly more effective by pulsing it with smaller and shorter duration pulses - more cylinders of smaller displacement - but turbos work just fine in bigger auto engines where the individual cylinder displacement is equivalent to the Testastretta (500cc per cylinder - equivalent to a 2 liter Porsche 4 cylinder).

So, using a turbo was the proper way to feed a Testastretta. Using a blower would have been the way to go for a Harley drag bike. Wrong venue for one of them.

F2
January 10th, 2008, 02:19 PM
Who said anything about blower? Turbo is way to go that has been proven way too many times. I was referring to V-twin configuration compare to inline engine configuration for top end runs.

2WheelTiger
January 10th, 2008, 02:43 PM
To quote you precisely; "I wonder why one would go with Turbo...." I don't think I misunderstood your sentence structure.

I answered your question in some logical detail. Twin or no twin, the turbo is the only way to go in that environment if you want to increase the BMEP (brake mean effective pressure) of the cylinders. What would you do? Run it normally aspirated? That would put the bike in a different class than it's in, and it STILL wouldn't be in the same class as an inline 4. Do you not understand Bonneville speed runs and classes?

WTF do you ask these things for if you already think you know your answer?

F2
January 10th, 2008, 02:51 PM
My point is very simple: It would be beter to run Turbo with inline four engine configration then to run Turbo on a V-twin configration for obvious reasons. What I would do? RUN my MV no need of any Turbo :).

Yes, they are very good watches actually. Very nicely made automatic. And they aren't really a replica because they openly mark the watch with Invicta all over it. But the watch is intentionally made to look like the submariner.

Hey guys I am doing great thanks for asking. In process of relocating you know who that goes, got a huge business opportunity couldn't say no to so I sold my business and my house due to close soon things are going In top gear.

Super busy at new Job and enjoying night life living bachelor life till my family moves here looking at houses these days up hear property prices are ridiculous but its a solid market up here and increase 5 percent every year traditionally. Chicago is a great town so much to do over here weather sometime sucks but city rocks.

Industrial designer Amir Glinik has come up with an incredible Ferrari motorcycle concept using a modified engine from the Ferrari Enzo supercar. Using drive-by-wire technology, the V4 superbike features hand controls adapted from an F-16 fighter jet and buttons based on those found on the steering wheel of Ferrari’s Formula 1 racecars. Other controls for the sound system and trip computer are located on an all weather touchscreen.

“Vintage and modern Ferrari projects influence my design,” Glinik notes. “It’s a mix of what I find to be the best Ferrari lines with the latest technology I could think of in terms of engine, gear and driving management.” He has also made a version in bright yellow. As far as how fast it goes and how much the bike would cost, we can only speculate about very big numbers in both cases. We have no idea if Glinik’s V4, which he’s been working on for the past few years, will ever reach the production stage, but we think he’s got a real winner here."
