    Default Coolness

Thanks for the great info Hammer. I am interested in the spring season for 2 reasons,

1: Success rate is higher due to higher bear movement, I hear.
2: Got 3 deer hunts booked this fall in good ol Tx.

Getting in touch with the Manitoba outfitters you recommended, also in dialogue with an Alberta outfitter. Will keep bugging you till finalizing.

    Darren,

Here's just what you need for the new cabin in the woods:

1 is questionable. I know guys that hunt both seasons and I've rarely heard of a difference. One possible (and likely) reason for the difference would be lack of available feed. In the fall, there are fields full of oats which bears absolutely love. Considerably less feed in the spring so bait stations probably get more action.

2 makes sense. There is only so many things you can do at once and if you don't want to give up any of your fall hunting season, coming to Canada for spring bear sounds like a good plan.

Let me know as things progress. I'd love to give you a tour of my little area of the world.

Where is the outfitter in Alberta located?

That's a riot. I wonder what it would cost to get one of those made.

Faisal, got some additional information for you that may help your spring bear decision.

Mountain Oak Outfitters is working with a fishing outfitter here in Dauphin that is an EXCELLENT guide. If you fish with Donny, you catch fish.

What they do is fish the morning and then head out to the bait in the afternoon.
You can't get into the bait station in the morning in the dark without disturbing the bears so they only hunt afternoons.
So rather than sitting around waiting all day, they are putting together fishing expeditions in the morning with Donny Stokotelny.

Check out Donny's site. I think you'll be impressed.

Ok, I finally got Ruth to get her pictures off her camera and now I've got something to post. I realize now that it's been like 6 weeks since I put up any new pictures.

    Ok, 07/15.
Ruth, myself, Terina and Desmond were out knocking down trees.
We also built a rock guard for behind the truck.

Here we are bucking up a big poplar.

Time to start welding. This is Desmond's rig.

I don't know what all tickets this young man has but there really isn't anything that he can't weld. Titanium, Stainless, Aluminum etc. And all of it with pressure tickets for gas rigs, refineries etc.

He's pretty **** amazing to watch.

Here are a couple shots from the road now.
You can see that the gravel is in all nice and neat and the trailer is in place.

We parked it there 07/28 and it'll sit there until 10/06 when we pick it up on the way to Terina and Desmond's for Thanksgiving weekend.

    Here is the whole family.
Desmond and Terina at the very back of the boat, your's truly, Debbie and herman Kevin. Kevin doesn't rank the title son-in-law yet. Des does though. He and Terina have been together longer than Ruth and I.

Ok, this is one weekend later.
We went up for the 6th of August to fall some trees.
Because it was just Ruth and I, we didn't get any pictures of the lumberjacking.

But my buddy George and his wife Genny came up.

He brought along an old bush shelter that his kids used in the winter waiting for the bus in the country.
Sure beat the heck out of those kids standing on the side of the road with a 30 mile an hour wind when it's -40.
Well, they're grown up and graduated now so they're glad to be rid of this thing.

It was a tad short when we started out. It would have made a perfect outhouse for those guys from the West side but I've got some taller friends.

I guess Ruth just thought I looked dashing putting a blade in a saber saw.

Ok, here's a few shots from right beside the trailer.
This first one is looking directly West towards the lake.

You can actually see the lake through the trees if you look carefully.
I've got a few more pictures from this view later and will have more by the end of September as well.

Under that big brush pile in the right of the picture is a HUGE dead spruce tree. We decided that it was going to be WAY too much work to clean up that spruce so it's getting burned under that brush pile as soon as the snow flies.

That's a picture of that same big bloody brush pile from a different angle.

That big spruce you can see in farther out in the left 1/3 of the picture is the biggest spruce on the lot and it has to come down.
It's too close to the lake to put the cabin in front of it but too far back to put the cabin behind it.
It's standing right in the middle of the kitchen right now.
