Default Fall Ride: Aug 29 - Sept 2

A thread for the details of the holiday weekend group.

    1. The decision has been made to trailer to Taos, NM, and do a 3-day loop through CO, returning to Taos on the final day of riding. We still need to work out truck and trailer logistics.

    - Gary and Ablie will truck/trailer
    - Greg will take his truck
    - Jim Ben using Mikyl's trailer -- WE HAVE A RAIL OPEN
    - Darren takes own truck?
    - Final logistics to be worked out later

    2. Departure will be early Friday morning with a late friday arrival, and the return will be early Tuesday moring with a late tuesday night arrival back in Dallas. Sat - Mon will be for riding.

    - Meet and load up point to be determined

    3. We will spend Friday night in Taos, Saturday night in Gunnison, Sunday night in Durango and Monday night back in Taos.

    Day one: Taos to Gunnison
This route is just over 300 miles. Depending on how we feel at the end of the day, we can add an addition 140 miles with a round-trip to Saguache.

    Day two: Gunnison to Durango

    Day Three Durango to Taos

    1. I need trailer space or I ride out there. If I ride out there I'll probably leave on Thursday evening and spend the night in Amarillo with my gf. If there's trailer space for me, I don't care whether we leave Thursday or Friday.

    2. Either way, Taos is better than Santa Fe IMHO. It has better roads in the immediate area if we base and loop; and if we decide we want to venture up into CO, you're that much closer.

    3. Yes, I need to be back in town by Tuesday evening.

    4. We need to sit down with some maps and have a beer or two.

I desperately want to make this ride, but Shelby has a dance competition that Sunday evening. I've even asked her if it would matter. She assures me that it would matter. :-/

    Absolutely! I prefer Bourbon, though!

Let's see who posts up for the ride, and we may be able to take one or two trucks between all riders.

When ya wanna sit down and look at maps?

Whenever you're ready bud. I can look at maps all day long. Preferably a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon/evening. In case we look at the maps too long.

I have a 24 y/o daughter getting married at the end of this year and a 2 y/o granddaughter that I can't get enough of. I totally understand. Gotta keep the priorities straight.

    How about Friday night?

Are you anywhere near Motopia? 7:30?

If not, suggest somewhere. I'll bring the laptop w/ cell data card... we can use Google maps to plan.

Not that my opinion should matter, as I probably can't make the ride, but we did a very similar ride a few years ago basing out of Taos.

I suggest the single location with a loop up into CO. and back because you can't run out of fantastic roads and scenery in CO. We just did a two day loop, but covered about 800 miles and some great roads.

64 out of Taos west to 84 past Chama to Pagosa Springs, CO.

160 up to South Fork, CO

149 up over Slumgillion Pass into Lake City, CO. Great little place to eat there.

Continue up to Hwy 50 (just west of Gunnison).

Hwy 50 west to 92 (just past Sapinero).

92 to Hotchkiss and then into Delta. That's pretty close to a full day's ride (except for Jim )

Then reverse back down 92 to 50 west into Delta and take 550 (Million Dollar Hwy) south to Durango then 160 east to Pagosa Springs and reverse the route back to Taos.

Of course, since y'all have a couple of other days, look up some passes such as Independence Pass up by Aspen, or Loveland Pass.

Here is another web site for some possible reference material on routes:

    CO. and UT Rides

Hope some of this helps, and have fun! I can't wait to get back and ride that whole area again.

Getting thru Pagosa Springs from west to east is a real pia.

Friday evening sounds good to me. I'm not anywhere near Motopia but can be there by 1930-2000.

Didn't know you had posted that same (basic) route in a different thread. Sounds like you have a handle on the good riding up that way.

Pick somewhere else if you like. I have an appointment at 6, but should be free to head just about anywhere by 6:30 or so...

awwww man... that looks like a nice ride plan. Looks like I won't be able to make ride 1 or 2. Guess I should just go ahead a winterize the bikes early this year.
